IELTS

If like me, you'd never heard of IELTS, you're in for a treat! IELTS is an acronym for International English Language Testing System. This test measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. You need to get a certain score on each test - there are four parts: speaking, writing, listening and reading. Check this website out for more information. There are two different IELTS tests - academic and general training, it's the general training one that we needed to sit.

We booked our test at the University of East Anglia (we live in Norwich), but they do them all over the UK. They cost £150 each. You have to get the required mark in all four parts of the test, otherwise you'll need to resit it.

We did do some prep before the day (the test takes almost a whole day). We bought the IELTS practice book and once you pay/book your test you get access to practice tests and information on the website too. Both are great resources.

It's worth noting here that whoever the lead applicant (in our case, Oscar) is will normally require a higher score than the spouse/partner. This obviously only applies if you are attempting to immigrate as a couple/family.

You can find the score you'll need on the CIC website depending on which program you're applying under. We applied under the Skilled Worker program. If you hired a lawyer, they will give you all the information you need regarding scores etc.

Luckily we got the scores we needed on our first go. So we saved our bank balances and our stress levels any further pressure!

To be honest, as long as you do your prep and have a good grasp of the English language then you shouldn't have a problem. English is our first language, so I guess we had an advantage there.
