Police Checks

If you're lucky and you've never lived anywhere other than the UK, you'll only have to complete a UK police check. It costs roughly £50 each and can be completed online. It's really easy to do and only takes a few days depending on your results/criminal history.

I lived in Canada for a year when I was younger on a work/travel visa so I was required to also get a RCMP police check. This was pretty complicated. The RCMP require a digital copy of your fingerprints. The RCMP only accept electronic/digital fingerprints from Canadian agencies. So I had to have my fingerprints taken "manually" at Norfolk Police HQ (there are only a few places in the UK who will do this). We made an appointment and had my fingerprints taken to specific instructions. The charge for this was roughly £70. Then we completed the RCMP check application form and sent it to a company called Commissionaires in Ottawa who would digitise my fingerprints and then forward them on to the RCMP. This cost around $200 CAD. The RCMP only charge $25 do complete the actual check.

So it was a pretty complicated, pricey adventure. But luckily the whole process only took a few weeks. If you're also in this position, I'd recommend making the check a priority due to the length of time/postage time it takes.
